Welcome to The Chickasaw East Village Restoration Committee Website

The Chickasaw East Village Restoration Committee is made up of homeowners, residents, and concerned citizens and businesses dedicated to restoring the long-neglected historic East Village to a thriving neighborhood and community. The restoration we will achieve will include things such as;

  • The safety of ourselves and our property, both at our homes and on the streets of the East Village
  • The reintegration of the East Village into mainstream civic and community events and government decisions in the city of Chickasaw, including capital investments
  • The change of the widespread public opinion that the East Village is not a place one would want to live
  • The beautification of our neighborhood streets, homes, and yards, both by community action and with the help of the city in enforcing codes which already exist for the city of Chickasaw
We will be working with the city council, the mayor, and law enforcement to achieve our goals.
We recognize that great changes have already taken place in the East village since the last election of city council officials. We hope to build on this momentum which was started by members of the community and carried forward with action from these community members and the government of the city of Chickasaw.

The committee will have a duly elected spokesperson attending every city council meeting and presenting the concerns of the neighborhood which have been presented to the committee. There is much to be done, and we will be presenting safety concerns and beautification issues at each meeting. We will be monitoring progress on our goals and on concerns presented at the council meetings and will report on these when it is warranted.

We look forward to rebuilding a long-neglected community back into a place that anyone would call home.

Southern Street Railroad Fence Decision
General News Norfolk Southern Railroad has finally gotten in touch with me regarding the fence of Southern St. It seems that the fence is located 52+ feet from the centerline of the track, and the railway only has a right of way of 50 feet from the center of the track. This decision means that the city has no obstacles in repairing, replacing, or removing the fence.

As many residents voted in the poll to remove the fence, it seems that the city now has the right (and the responsibility in my opinion) to remove the eyesore sections of rusted poles, and the dangerous sections of loose fencing. I hope that this will put this issue to rest and we can get on with the business of restoring the East Village!

Chickasaw United Methodist helps the East Village cleanup!
General News The East Village Restoration Committee would like to thank the Chickasaw United Methodist Church and the Auburn Wesley Caravan for their help in the neighborhood. The Auburn group, along with the youth from the Chickasaw United Methodist Church, and Leonard Bowman and Tom Ray from the committee held a cleanup on June 18 in the East Village. The group separated into several smaller groups and help cleanup the home and yard of one of our disabled neighbors, the yard of a mother-to-be, and portions of Gulf Street. The committee would also like to thank Amanda McKee, Adam Bourne and Mike Reynolds for their help in organizing the cleanup

First-ever historical plaque awarded in the East Village
General News
On June 13, Mignonne Smith of 3 Hill Street, located in the East Village of Chickasaw, was awarded a historical building plaque for the interior of her home, which is now designated the NORSWORTHY-SMITH Home. The house was built in 1919 and the interior has retained enough of the original design that this plaque was awarded. Special thanks goes to the Chickasaw Historical Society, whose members worked to have the home designated as a historically significant home. As with so many things recently, this is a first for the East Village of Chickasaw, but we hope to earn more recognition in the coming months for the East Village. It is great to see the East Village receiving some long-overdue recognition as the oldest neighborhood in Chickasaw!

EVRC President Nominated as Citizen of the Year!
General News
The East Village Restoration Committee would like to congratulate Leonard Bowman. Leonard was nominated for the Chickasaw Citizen of the Year award! Although Leonard wasn't selected as this year's citizen of the year, just receiving the nomination was quite an honor. The other nominees for the award were Marilyn Jones and Barbara Pulliam, with Barbara being selected as the winner. Leonard's hard work in the City, and more recently as president of the East Village Restoration Committee was the reason behind the nomination. In a move that was true to his style, and partially why Leonard received the nomination, just 1 hour after the announcement that he didn't receive the award, Leonard was helping with a cleanup in the East Village for a disabled neighbor. Thank you, Leonard!
